There have been many deficiencies found in Port State Control Inspections with regards to the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships. As a response, the Paris MOU has announced that they will have a concentrated inspection campaign on MARPOL Annex VI from September 1st to November 30th 2018.

In February 2017, a container ship went aground at the entrance to the deep-water channel Lillegrund, Denmark. Though the bridge crew were aware of shallow waters ahead, they were caught by surprise when the grounding occurred. The incident resulted in serious damage to the ship’s hull and several fuel oil tanks and ballast tanks were ruptured resulting in pollution of the environment.
