Gas tankers

For today’s gas operators, safety, quality and operational efficiency have always been first priority. LNG shipping has a very impressive and unprecedented safety record after more than 50 years of commercial operation. Training of crew and managing competencies is essential for an operator of gas tankers. At Seagull we have worked closely with SIGTTO to develop a complete competency management system for the gas tanker industry.

Among topics included in our e-learning modules are:

  • Liquid cargo properties
  • Vetting inspections
  • Ship to ship transfer operations
  • Low temperature insulation

One of the biggest issues within LNG shipping is how to ensure that shortages of seagoing personnel, with experience of LNG ships, do not affect the ability to effectively and safely man the expanding LNG fleet.

Therefore, with a view to maintaining the quality of such officers, SIGTTO developed their LNG Operational Standards for officers with the intention of their being adopted as the industry’s default best practice standard. And later the standards for LPG vessels.

The robust implementation of SIGTTO, both at the training and verification levels, will be critical to its success. These standards are very good material and excellent basis for all cargo handling competencies in a competence management system.  This being said, SIGTTO encourages individual operators to consider any additional or more appropriate standards that may be suitable, to their specific operations, ships or trades

One of the most critical issues a shipping company faces today did not exist 20 years ago: not enough competent talent to fill all the necessary positions.

Thus, it is crucial that the industry continuously renews its focus on how to recruit, train, assess, promote, and retain talented individuals.
