Flue gas plant

As crude oil tankers became larger, incidents of crude oil tank explosions increased. Investigations attempted to identify the sources of ignition, sighting one of the potential reasons being the build-up and discharge of static electricity within a tank where the atmosphere was within flammable limits. This was made worse because oxygen was allowed into the tank instead of an inert gas.

Details

This module will familiarise the student with the theory of boiler flue gas type inert gas plants in the safe operation of ships carrying flammable liquid cargoes before explaining the functions of their major components. The operating procedures for these plants are covered, along with alarm and monitoring facilities and basic fault finding during operation. Areas where maintenance is likely to be needed are also identified.
