The back deck of a seismic research vessel is an area of high activity. Here pressurised air-gun systems, seismic streamers and deflector systems are mixed with numerous towing winches and handling systems. The equipment is handled and operated on a slippery deck, occasionally flushed by heavy seas, onboard a vessel pitching and rolling its way along a seismic line.
The aim of the module is to give all personnel working on the deck of a deep seismic vessel, the knowledge necessary to appreciate the hazards concerned and the actions required to allow them to work safely at all times. Information is given on how to control the risks associated with general deck work, work on deck during a seismic operation and when a vessel is mooring. The module would also assist a company in their responsibilities under section A-I/14 paragraph 2.1.2 of the STCW code Part A, to provide familiarisation information to newly employed seafarers.
