Personnel basket transfer

The use of personnel transfer baskets (PTB) on tankers is increasing because of STS cargo operations. Whilst offshore personnel can be familiar with the operation, tanker crews may not be. It is a hazardous operation where minor mistakes can be fatal. In addition offshore vessels often undertake basket transfers in poor weather conditions, making the operation even more risky.

Seagull Maritime has created this module showing how to plan and undertake basket transfers safely and effectively. The module aims to provide the underpinning knowledge necessary to ensure that effective safeguards are in place for personnel transfer operations between two sites using a crane and personnel basket. It provides guidance on how to inspect transfer baskets and ensure the correct crane is used. The module also identifies key risks and how they should be controlled, giving guidance on the number of personnel and the preparations required, as well as how a typical basket transfer is carried out.
